River of Glory [SATB]
By Schutte, Dan
River of Glory is especially appropriate for the Rite of Christian Intiation of Adults [the RCIA], during both Lent and Easter. The paschal character of the hymn reflects the emphasis of the preparation of the catechumens and the joy of the mystagogia. River of Glory is also appropriate for baptisms, confirmations, and other celebrations of life and grace. Because the text does not include the word Alleluia, the hymn can be sung during Lent, as is appropriate. We truly need songs for this season that reflect the themes of the paschal mystery and the Church's common preparation for the celebration of baptism at Eastertime. In one of the Gospels for the Sundays of Lent, for example, Jesus speaks of a "spring of living water," called to mind precisely by this hymn.
Publisher Comments
Dan Schutte composed River of Glory, both words and music, especially for the 1992 edition of the American Catholic Hymnbook. This song was never before published. There are three other new compositions by Dan in this book, but River of Glory is the first to be published in this octavo format, arranged for full choir. Truly gifted in text, melodic composition, keyboard arrangement, even in art, Dan Schutte is one of the finest contemporary composers now writing for the Church. His music is thoroughly congregational, biblical, and liturgical.
A full score of River of Glory is available separately, with music for three trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba: ISBN 0915866277.
